1. Skardu City
If you are city explorer and a shopping enthusiast then Skardu city could be best option to explore.
2. Kharpocho Fort
Kharpocho Fort (translates to King of Forts) is situated on a hill overlooking the Skardu town. The fort was built by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, ruler of Baltistan in the 16th century. Kharpocho Fort is open for visitors on nominal entry fee.
3. Shigar Valley
The Valley of Shigar is the gateway to the great mountain peaks of the Karakorams, Gasherbrum & K-2, is only 23 km away from Skardu via jeep road. Shigar valley is fertile land with terraced fields of wheat, maize and barley & orchards of apricots, mulberries, peaches, plums, pears, apples and nuts. Shigar village has an old wooden mosque which was built by Kashmiri carpenters several hundred years ago.
4. Shigar Fort
The Shigar Fort (also called as Fong-Khar in Balti) means “The Fort on Rock” is an old fort, located in the village of Shigar. The fort was built by the Raja of Amacha Dynasty in the 17th century. It has been restored and serves as a luxury hotel & museum.
5. Khaplu Valley
The Valley of Khaplu is 103 km east of Skardu. Many famous mountains such as Masherbrum, Saltoro, Sia Kangri, K-6, K-7 are located in Khaplu. Chaqchan Mosque is one of the earliest mosques in Baltistan (1504 AD) built by Syed Ali Hamdani. The Valley of Khaplu is home to the Palace of Raja of Khaplu.
6. Khaplu Palace
Khaplu Palace also known as Yabgo Khar (meaning “The fort on the roof”), is an old fort and palace located in Khaplu. The palace is an architectural heritage and a tourist attraction. It was built in the mid-19th century. It served as a royal residence for the Raja of Khaplu
7. Buddha Rock
Buddha Rock, dating back to 8th century AD, is huge Buddha figure surrounded by small Buddhisatvas is carved on a rock. It is located just 3 kilometers from Skardu on Skardu-Satpara Road.
8. Sand Dunes
What a stunning seen of sun dunes just in the middle of the mountains. It is on the way to Shigar valley, but around 2 km away from the road.
9. Deosai Planes
The Deosai Plain is 32 km south of Skardu. This plateau is the habitat of the greatly threatened Himalayan Brown Bear and many other wild animals. At an average elevation of 4000 meters, Deosai is now a National Park and protected area for wildlife. Spring comes to Deosai in August when millions of wild flowers begin to bloom all over the lush green grassland. This is a time when Deosai looks like a paradise with a landscape full of wild flowers on green rolling hills and crystal clear water streams with snow covered peaks in the background.
10. Manthokha Waterfall
Manthokha Waterfall is about 180 feet high, fresh gurgling streams falling down from towering rocky mountain. It is about 78 kilometers away from Skardu city.
Beautiful Lakes in Skardu
1. Satpara Lake
Satpara Lake is about 8 km north of Skardu and 20 minutes by jeep, surrounded by glacial mountains, which are mirrored in its crystal clear waters. The lake has a fairytale island in the middle, which can be reached by boats. This lake also abounds in fish and is considered ideal for fishing.
2. Sheosar Lake
Sheosar Lake located in Deosai National Park. Sheosar Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes.
3. Kachura Lake (Upper Kachura)
This beautiful lake is situated about 32 km from Skardu town. It is full of brown trout and its banks are adorned with natural flowers. You can enjoy boat-ride in this lake also.
4. Shangri-La Lake (Lower Kachura)
Shangri-La Lake also knows as lower Kachura Lake is situated in Kachura village in Skardu. It is part of the Shangrila resort. Shangri-La Lake is located at a drive of about 20 minutes from Skardu. It is a popular tourist destination.
